Improvement of sanitary and productive parameters in fattening lambs with the administration of the postbiotic INGUBAL Ruminant Cebadero®.

INTRODUCTION


INGUBAL Ruminant Cebadero
® is a product with postbiotic activity that is administered as a complementary feed and favors the modulation of the intestinal microbiota, the immune response against respiratory pathogens and improves the digestion and absorption of nutrients (Bravo et al., 2021; Salminen et al., 2021).

The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of incorporating the postbiotic INGUBAL RuminantCebadero® in the fattening feed on health indicators and productive parameters of the lambs.

 

METHOD

The study was carried out in the feedlots of Cooperativa EA Group (Extremadura). Three tests were conducted at different times of the year. A total of 200 lambs of about 2-3 months of age and 20 kg b.w. were tested in each trial, which were distributed in two groups of 100 animals.

The Control Group fed with standard feed and the INGUBAL Group fed the same feed supplemented with
INGUBAL Ruminant Cebadero
® at a dose of 0.2-0.4 %. In addition, the animals were monitored throughout their stay in the feedlot, between 5 and 7 weeks, and productive and health data were collected.

 

RESULTS

  • The main causes of death diagnosed in these feedlots were pneumonic processes. Pasteurella multocida type A was the most prevalent agent.
  • The supplemented animals showed a higher growth rate (P< 0.05) and higher feed efficiency. The supplemented animals showed a 10.8% higher GMD and a 19% lower CI.
  • Hematological and biochemical values before and after the study were within reference ranges, demonstrating the safety of the supplement.
  • The elevated alkaline phosphatase values (P<0.05) in the INGUBAL Group would be indicative of the higher growth rate of these lambs. The urea level was elevated in all animals, however, it was significantly lower (P<0.01) in the animals of the INGUBAL Group. This could be due to a better utilization of feed proteins due to the administration of the postbiotic.
  • Fewer and smaller pneumonic lesions were observed in the INGUBAL Group. Health incidences in this group were also lower, although the differences between groups were not significant.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of the postbiotic INGUBAL Ruminant Cebadero® in lambs improves the productive and sanitary parameters in the fattening stage, since it has been specifically designed to improve the immunity of the lamb against the most common processes faced by the animal at this stage, improving the profitability and welfare of the animals.
