Improving the immune system, the key to dealing with Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD)

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) is a non-contagious vector-borne infectious viral disease (Culicoides spp.) affecting domestic and wild ruminants.

To date, numerous outbreaks have been confirmed through the official procedures of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in the center and southwest of the peninsula, with mortalities ranging from 5% to 20%, depending on the physical condition and immune status of the animals.

In general, deer are the most sensitive animals, followed by cattle, fallow deer, roe deer and sheep. EHD in cervids can cause fever, loss of appetite and flight instinct, congestive, reddish lesions in the mouth and nose, bluish tongue, abortions and stillbirths, among others. In cattle it can produce moderate and self-limiting symptoms for about two weeks. Sheep are susceptible to infection, but little susceptible to clinical disease, and goats have very little susceptibility to infection.

EHD deaths are fulminant and deer do not respond to treatment once they start, so the best strategy is prevention. One of the measures recommended for disease control is vector control, using insecticides and repellents on animals, means of transport and facilities, as well as the use of insecticides and larvicides to control possible breeding areas.

Stress from handling, transport and physiological states such as estrus aggravate the situation. The maintenance of the immune system at optimal levels is currently proving to be the most effective way to reduce the incidence, which is why the use of immunomodulators is useful.
