PROVIBAL Corderos® helps control perinatal diseases

INTRODUCTION

Diarrheic syndromes in lambs are one of the main causes of production losses in sheep farms, both meat and dairy. In addition, perinatal mortality of lambs can reach 20%, which is one of the most relevant causes of health problems as well as entailing significant economic losses.

On the one hand, the imbalance between absorption and secretion processes at the intestinal level causes diarrhea that can be aggravated by the intervention of different infectious and parasitic agents. The severity of the condition depends on the etiology of the infectious agents involved and the state of the lamb’s immune system.

On the other hand, wet mouth syndrome, which occurs in animals from birth to 24-48 hours of life, is an endotoxic colibacillosis caused by Escherichia coli bacteria, and appears in immunodeficient animals that have not received sufficient colostrum. The name of the syndrome comes from the characteristic hypersalivation caused by hypoglycemia in neonates, who usually die without diarrhea.

To address these perinatal diseases that cause major problems in sheep production, the best strategy is prevention through proper immunization and reinforcement of the animals’ immune system.

 

OUR STUDY

PROVIBAL Corderos® is a postbiotic manufactured from the fermentation of Lactobacillus spp. strains. of the INGULADOS collection. This product is specifically designed for lambs in the early stages of immune system development and contains a high concentration of antimicrobial and immunomodulatory molecules to improve animal health and welfare when administered as a feed supplement.

A trial was conducted on more than 10,000 animals from 10 Manchega and Lacaune sheep farms. PROVIBAL Corderos® 1 cc (mL) was administered to each animal at birth directly orally via syringe, followed by a second administration of 2 cc at 12 h.

A complete record of the clinical history of the animals was made with a detailed report of the clinical signs presented, especially related to diarrhea and wet mouth syndrome, and the treatments prescribed to the animals were noted. In addition, samples were taken for blood tests.

 

RESULTS

Oral administration of the postbiotic PROVIBAL Corderos® as a supplement can be considered safe, since its prolonged administration does not alter biomarkers related to oxidative stress or tissue damage, improving animal health and welfare (Table 1). Thanks to the administration of the product and adequate immunization, a 73% reduction in perinatal mortality and an 80% reduction in diarrhea in the first weeks of life have been achieved (Figure 1). without the use of antibioticsresulting in lambs with greater vigor and better production indexes (Figure 2).

The modulation of the microbiota thanks to the administration of postbiotics favors the maturation and correct development of an immune system in the early ages, especially in the digestive tract which, together with the antimicrobial molecules present in the product, favors the control of digestive processes such as neonatal diarrhea and Wet Mouth Syndrome.
