Resolution of gastrointestinal disorders through the use of FORTEBAL® postbiotic in small animals.

Symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders are one of the most frequent reasons for consultation in small animal veterinary centers. Although there are different approaches to gastrointestinal disease depending on the severity and etiology of the disease, the use of postbiotics is a novel tool that aids in the treatment of gastrointestinal problems. Postbiotics are made with beneficial bacteria that have antimicrobial, immunomodulatory and microbiota modulating capacity.

In this study, a postbiotic nutritional supplement was developed with two registered strains of lactic acid bacteria. The final product obtained, registered and marketed as
contains a high concentration of inactivated microbial cells (>108 CFU/mL) in addition to its antimicrobial and immunomodulatory molecules.



The study was carried out in 6 veterinary centers in the autonomous community of Extremadura in the period from December 2022 to April 2023. The veterinarians of the selected centers were previously trained in the following topics
, its usefulness and the criteria for inclusion and exclusion of patients. Briefly, the inclusion criterion was considered to be the presence of digestive symptoms with the presence of acute or chronic diarrhea in dogs and cats attending internal medicine, especially of unknown etiology. The presence of vomiting without alterations in stool, toxi-infections or chemical intoxications confirmed by complementary tests and the ingestion of foreign bodies requiring surgery were considered as exclusion criteria.

The administration pattern recommended to the veterinarians of the centers included in the study was 3 doses of 1 mL per 5 kg of weight orally separated at intervals of between 8 and 12 hours. The administration of extra doses was left to the veterinarian’s discretion.



The most remarkable clinical result is a reduction of acute diarrhea of food or unknown etiology in dogs with good general health in 90.9% of clinical cases diagnosed by external veterinarians (Table 2). The resolution time for acute diarrhea was between 1 and 5 days. As food etiology, suspected food intolerance, dietary changes or ingestion of spoiled food or foreign bodies that did not require surgery were considered. Stool characteristics and defecation pattern were not included in the objective assessment of symptomatology because they were not observable signs by the veterinarian at the time of consultation.

As for diarrhea of chronic evolution that presented to the internal medicine office due to clinical worsening, a favorable resolution was obtained in 66.7% of the cases. Cases of animals with previous pathologies and chronic, recurrent or complicated gastrointestinal disorders associated with a wide range of etiologies such as paralytic ileus, protein-losing enteropathy and other diseases such as diabetes were considered.

to assist conventional treatments of gastrointestinal disorders to achieve a faster and more effective resolution. The novel usefulness of this compound lies in the fact that they have been specifically designed for this purpose based on intensive research work and that they are used in specific clinical cases and in appropriate doses. This experimental design favors the direct application of the research study to clinical practice.
